Whitland, a family-oriented neighborhood developed in the 1920s, is about 15 minutes from downtown Nashville. This house is across the street from the baseball field at Montgomery Bell Academy, a private school for boys in seventh through 12th grade. Elmington Park, which has a playground, a lawn and a picnic area, is less than a mile away. A Kroger supermarket and a Trader Joe’s are within two miles, as is the 27-hole McCabe Golf Course, built in 1942.

Vanderbilt University is five minutes away by car. Centennial Park, home to a full-scale replica of the Parthenon, is 10 minutes away.

Size: 3,900 square feet

Price per square foot: $500

Indoors: The front facade with its arched entry porch was once a dark red brick, but was painted white by the seller.

The front door opens into a living room with hardwood floors, a fireplace and windows with white shutters. Opposite is a dining room painted a glossy teal, with a white-beaded chandelier.

At the back of the house is an open kitchen and family room, papered in a green-and-white print. The kitchen has space for a dining table, and the base of the center island is painted a mint green. The family room has a fireplace flanked by built-in cabinetry.

A powder room and a bar with a dedicated beverage refrigerator are also in this part of the house.

The primary suite is on the first floor, next to the staircase behind the living room. The bedroom is papered in a blue-and-green print. The en suite bathroom has a separate soaking tub and walk-in shower, and is adjacent to a walk-in closet with a center storage island.

Four guest rooms are upstairs. Two have en suite bathrooms; the other two share a bathroom off the hallway, with a double vanity and a combined shower and tub.

Outdoor space: The screened porch off the kitchen is paved with brick and has room for a dining table and a separate sitting area. The backyard has a hammock strung between two tall trees. The detached garage has two parking spots.

This house is on the route of the city’s annual King William Fair Parade, in a neighborhood of well-preserved houses, some on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a block from the River Walk, which winds along the banks of the San Antonio River.

Downtown San Antonio is less than 10 minutes away, as is the Alamo Mission. Austin is nearly an hour-and-a-half drive; Houston is about three and a half hours away.

Size: 2,748 square feet

Price per square foot: $728

Indoors: A paved path leads from the sidewalk to the wraparound front porch, which has ample space for relaxing.

Behind the front door is a foyer with hardwood floors that continue into a living room with an original fireplace and large windows with the original leaded glass.

Across the foyer is a dining room with more original leaded-glass windows. This space has access to an enclosed sunroom that was once part of the porch.

Through the dining room is a sunny butler’s pantry that connects to a kitchen with marble countertops and stainless steel appliances. A laundry room is off the kitchen, and a half bathroom is at the end of the main hallway.

A wide landing at the top of the stairs is used as a family room, with access to a balcony overlooking the street. A large guest room is off the family room, with a walk-in closet and an en suite bathroom. The primary bedroom is opposite, with another en suite bathroom. Down a short corridor is a guest room used as an office; next door is another full bathroom.

Another guest suite is on the third floor, with a bedroom and a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: The screened porch has doors that open to the backyard. The landscaping there and in the front yard was done by the president of the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

Taxes: $18,252 (estimated)

Bethel, about 70 miles northwest of Portland, is a quaint town with easy access to popular ski areas: Sunday River, the second-largest ski resort in Maine, is 15 minutes away; Wildcat Mountain is about 45 minutes away, in New Hampshire.

This house, which is half a block from the town green, was once a restaurant and retains a built-in bar, wine cellar and pizza oven. It is within walking distance of the Bethel Historical Society and the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, a 15,000-square-foot space devoted to the science and history of rocks, local and extraterrestrial.

Size: 5,050 square feet

Price per square foot: $396

Indoors: A yard landscaped with mature trees separates this house from the street, and the entry is at the center of a covered porch lined with Greek columns.

The living room is to the right of the foyer, with an ornate, pressed-metal ceiling and two porch-facing windows. It faces a sitting room with more pressed-metal ceilings and an early 20th-century brick fireplace flanked by built-in cabinetry.

Behind this room is a space that once served as the restaurant lounge, with a built-in booth and a bar that has hanging storage for stemmed glasses. Off one side of the bar is a sunroom; off the other is a kitchen with a large center island, a commercial-grade Wolf range, a pizza oven and space for a dining table.

A full bathroom and a half bathroom are also on this level, near the barroom.

The bedrooms are on the second and third floors. Two bedrooms with pressed-metal ceilings are at the top of the main staircase on the second floor; they share a full bathroom off the hallway, with penny-tile floors and a claw-foot soaking tub. Two more bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are in a guest wing off a long corridor.

The remaining two bedrooms, on the third floor, are reached from a staircase hidden behind a door between the main second-floor bedrooms. One has a bathroom next door. The other is laid out like a studio apartment, with a kitchenette, a Jacuzzi tub open to the living space and an enclosed bathroom with a shower.

Outdoor space: The house sits on more than half an acre, framed by a lawn and mature trees. A bocce court is on one side, next to a grassy area that currently holds a wood picnic table. A barn with a garage is at the edge of the property, and the driveway is gated.

Taxes: $7,380 (estimated)
