On Sunday, Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios claimed his first ATP Tour singles title since 2019 after a week of stellar performances at the Citi Open in Washington, DC. The 27-year-old defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to top-off an impressive week of tennis. He becomes the first player ever to win both the singles and doubles titles at the Citi Open in the same tournament.
On his path to the final, Nick dismantled some of the ATP Tour’s top-ranked players including Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka. In the Quarter-Finals, he also endured a three-set thriller against Frances Tiafoe, a DMV native who grew up less than 10 miles from the Citi Open grounds. Nick will receive 500 ranking points (the maximum on offer at the tournament) and will go from a world ranking of 63 to 37. His highest world ranking is 13 which was achieved in October 2016.
Two titles, one tournament
The men’s singles title wasn’t the only thing that the Wimbledon runner-up picked up from the Citi Open. After his singles final, Kyrgios returned back on court with close friend and Laver Cup teammate Jack Sock to claim the doubles title. They defeated Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek in straight sets (7-5, 6-4). This is the second doubles title that the pair have won together.
Which tournament will Kyrgios compete in next?
After the Wimbledon Final, Nick Kyrgios travelled to the United States to compete in the hard-court swing. This is a series of North American tournaments that lead up to the US Open in late August. His first stop was the Atlanta Open which he was forced to withdraw from due to a knee injury. He emphasised his disappointment to the Atlanta crowd.
Nick will now travel to the Canadian Open in Montreal in the hopes of continuing his impressive run. After the Canadian Open, it is unclear whether he will compete in the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open (North Carolina) or if he will use his time to prepare for the US Open in New York. With 2000 ranking points up for grabs, it makes sense for Kyrgios to focus on the latter. Kyrgios recently announced that he would not be representing Team World at the Laver Cup in September after deciding to spend time with his family and girlfriend. Therefore, the US Open may be his last major appearance until the 2023 season.
