The Carolina Panthers know that a change at quarterback will be their best chance of altering their fortunes for the better.

After all, Sam Darnold has been inconsistent while P.J. Walker is unreliable.

Likewise, the jury is still out on whether Matt Corral will be their future franchise quarterback.

But until that happens, it looks like Baker Mayfield will be the Panthers’ starter for Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season.

He is the best option they have because of his playoff experience and good production.

That’s why the Panthers traded for the former Cleveland Browns play-caller in exchange for a conditional fifth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

That pick will likely become a fourth-rounder because it looks like Mayfield will play 70 percent of the snaps for Carolina this season.

If you need proof, here’s Mayfield connecting with wide receiver Robby Anderson.

The completion from Mayfield to Anderson started with a play-action sequence.

Then, Mayfield was able to throw the ball through two defenders who were covering Anderson.

Despite the mismatch, the wideout still completed the play.

That touchdown pass at training camp is important because Anderson had apprehensions about Mayfield as their starter.

That completion could change his perception of Mayfield.

Take Training Camp Videos With A Grain Of Salt

Yes, Mayfield does have talent as a quarterback and he wouldn’t be a first-overall selection if he didn’t have it.

However, he did this play at a training camp wherein the defense is easier to deal with.

It would be better if the former Oklahoma standout can replicate that touchdown during the games that matter.

That’s a tall order because edge rushers are hunting for him every snap.

Still, that connection is a good start in developing their chemistry.
