The Golden State Warriors kick off the 2023-24 NBA season on opening night against the Phoenix Suns, an electrifying matchup that features some of the league’s biggest stars.

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson will be the first pair of the season to go up against Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, with all four of them considered to be some of the best shooters currently in the league.

The Warriors do luck out as they likely won’t see Bradley Beal as the Suns are being cautious with the guard who is dealing with a back injury.

Despite all the star power on the court, the main storyline will be Durant’s return to the Bay Area.

Durant made the controversial decision to leave Golden State for the Brooklyn Nets despite leading them to consecutive NBA titles in 2017 and 2018.

His exit left the question whether or not the Warriors would retire Durant’s jersey, though Jayson Tatum made his opinion known on the issue via his Twitter account.

Tatum references Durant by his No. 35, but he also names Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Curry, and Thompson as players who should see their jerseys raised in the rafters as well.

Curry will go down as the greatest player in franchise history, but Durant’s efforts to bring them multiple championships should be celebrated by the organization and its fans.

When all is said and done, it feels likely that Golden State will do right by Durant and honor him with a jersey retirement whenever he decides to walk away from basketball for good.
