With Mike McCarthy gone, the Dallas Cowboys need a new head coach, and they have begun interviewing candidates.
They drew some attention a little earlier this week by talking to Deion Sanders, the Hall of Fame cornerback who played for their last Super Bowl-winning team in the 1995 season and is currently the head coach at the University of Boulder Colorado.
But there is an argument to be made that they need to hire an experienced head coach who will command a high level of respect and know what he’s doing, and to Nick Harris of the Star Telegram, the best such candidate is Pete Carroll, per Zach Gelb.
.@NickHarrisFWST says Pete Carroll would be the best hire the Cowboys could make this offseason.

Harris feels Carroll can build a strong defense, given his track record in 14 seasons as the Seattle Seahawks’ head coach, as well as build a strong staff that could yield someone who will end up being his successor.
Carroll, 73, guided the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl championship during the 2013 season and very nearly won another one the following year, and they did so on the strength of one of the best defenses in recent NFL history, which was nicknamed the “Legion of Boom.”
He started his NFL coaching career as the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator in 1990, and after five years in that role, he was the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996.
Dallas has had one of the league’s more star-studded rosters for the last several years, but they haven’t reached the NFC Championship Game since 1995.
Carroll is someone who would bring instant credibility to a Dallas franchise that has failed to live up to its glorious past.
