Ten years after last playing for the Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, the team retired McDavid’s jersey on Friday night.
McDavid was drafted by the Otters first overall in 2012 after being the third player granted exceptional status in OHL behind John Tavares 2005 and Aaron Ekblad 2011. He will be honoured in front of a sold-out crowd at Erie Insurance Arena on Friday night.
In his three seasons with team, he played 166 games, recording 97 goals (appropriately) and 188 assists for 285 points, ranking fourth all-time in team history.
The closest McDavid would come to an OHL championship would be in 2014-15, when they lost in the finals to the Oshawa Generals.
McDavid has continued his legacy into the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, winning three Hart Trophies, five Art Ross trophies and one Rocket Richard trophy, and became the sixth player in NHL history to win the Conn Smythe Trophy despite being on the losing team.
