The New England Patriots are pushing forward in their head coaching search, reportedly conducting a three-hour virtual interview with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
With the Lions still competing in the NFL playoffs, the remote format allowed both parties to connect as Johnson’s impressive track record with Detroit has placed him among the top candidates for head coaching positions across the league.
It also marked a significant point in New England’s selection process.

The Patriots also have met with Byron Leftwich, Pep Hamilton and Mike Vrabel.
While Vrabel may be the frontrunner, Johnson’s interview provided an opportunity to outline his vision for the team’s future, particularly his interest in working with quarterback Drake Maye, who represents one of New England’s key assets.
The coming days will reveal whether Johnson is ready to take his first head coaching role and willing to depart from Detroit for this opportunity.
Despite being a sought-after candidate in recent years, Johnson opted to remain with the Lions, reportedly turning down offers from the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders.
This coaching search follows a period of significant change for the Patriots.
The team parted ways with Bill Belichick, widely regarded as the NFL’s greatest coach, and briefly transitioned to Jerod Mayo.
However, Mayo’s tenure proved short-lived, as he was fired after a challenging 4-13 season.
