The San Francisco 49ers have wasted no time in making some sweeping changes in the first few days of their offseason, which have included the firing of special teams coordinator Brian Schneider and defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen.
One of the many things they will have to do this offseason is make a decision on whether to give quarterback Brock Purdy a contract extension and how much to pay him if they do extend him now.
During a press conference that was held on Wednesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan affirmed his confidence in Purdy despite somewhat of a down year, per Ari Meirov.
#49ers HC Kyle Shanahan on Brock Purdy:
“We’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We just almost did. And I know he’s capable of getting the Niners to the Super Bowl in the future.”

After making the Pro Bowl last season, Purdy’s touchdown percentage and pass completion percentage fell this season, and he threw multiple interceptions during crunch time.
A few people have therefore wondered whether it would be wise for the Niners to stick with him moving forward, but it’s easy to forget how great he looked in 2023 and how things crumbled around him in 2024.
The Niners had a massive rash of injuries this season, especially to their skill players and offensive line, and that was clearly one factor in the dip in Purdy’s numbers.
He guided them to the Super Bowl last winter, where they committed a few miscues and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs by the narrowest of margins.
It could be argued that some moderate retooling of their roster and a season of relatively good health will result in Purdy looking every bit as excellent as he looked in 2023.
