Report: Justin Verlander agrees to join Giants for 20th season

The three-time Cy Young Award winner agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Giants on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Terms of the agreement were not immediately known.

Verlander, who will turn 42 in February, had a bumpy 2024 after getting a late start to the season due to right shoulder inflammation and a neck injury that later kept him off the mound for two months.

In total, Verlander threw 90.1 innings for the Houston Astros, posting a 5.48 ERA and 74 strikeouts.

It was the worst season of his career, as his numbers dropped across the board, leading the AL West-champion Astros to leave Verlander off their post-season roster.

The 2011 AL MVP, Verlander has performed as arguably the greatest pitcher of his generation, owning a career 262-147 record, a 3.30 ERA and 3,416 strikeouts over 3,415.2 innings. He ranks 10th on MLB’s all-time strikeout list and became the fourth-oldest pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in 2022.

In addition to his personal accolades, the six-foot-five right-hander has won two World Series titles with Houston and pitched in the Fall Classic five separate years. Over 226.0 career playoff innings, he has a 3.58 ERA and 244 strikeouts.

Verlander was originally selected in the first round, second overall, of the 2004 draft by the Detroit Tigers. He went on to spend 13 seasons in the Motor City, earning six trips to the All-Star Game, two of his three Cy Youngs, his MVP, and the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year Award.
