While there are several teams who can claim to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders, the championship will still run through the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs are on a quest to make history with a third straight Super Bowl victory, and they’re set up to do just that as they own the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
At 15-1, Kansas City was a dominant force during the regular season despite not having a consistent offense for most of it.
Patrick Mahomes didn’t deliver his usual gaudy passing yards and touchdown numbers, but he was still one of the best at keeping his offense on schedule.
Now, Mahomes and other key starters will get multiple weeks off before hitting the field again.
While health is always the main priority, one former NFL QB is saying that the extended time off could end up being detrimental to the Chiefs.
“The way it sets up right now … they’re gonna go three and a half weeks without meaningful football. That’s scary. That’s a recipe for getting upset in the divisional round,” Chris Simms said, via the “Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz.”

Head coach Andy Reid announced that Mahomes and others would sit out their Week 18 matchup against the Denver Broncos, so that, plus a first-round bye, gives them additional time to rest.
Yet, as Simms pointed out, that could end up hurting the team as it could take them out of their rhythm and push them to ramp up quicker than usual.
However, Kansas City has earned the benefit of the doubt considering its recent playoff success.
