Maybe the NHL disciplinarians were inspired after watching Canada’s dive-filled game against the Czechs at the world juniors on Thursday.
Either way, New Jersey Devils defenceman Dougie Hamilton was fined $2,000 in supplementary discipline for diving/embellishment by the NHL, the league announced Friday.
Hamilton was warned after an incident during the Devils’ game against the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 4 was flagged by NHL hockey operations. His second citation earned him the $2,000 fine for an incident at 9:12 of the second period in a game on Dec. 23 against the New York Rangers. Hamilton and Rangers forward Brett Berard were assessed minor penalties on the play.
The NHL’s hockey operations department monitors all games and flags any incidents of diving or embellishment deserving of further discipline under Rule 64.
The money from the fine goes to the players’ emergency assistance fund.
