Cubs, Marlins Announce Trade On Sunday

The Major League Baseball offseason has been filled with drama and excitement as many star players have changed teams via trades and free agency.

With names such as Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, Willy Adames, and Blake Snell all switching teams, MLB fans have been on the edge of their seat all off-season.

Along with all of the big-name players involved in deals, some less-known players are being exchanged.

On Sunday, a trade was announced between the Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Cubs are acquiring utilityman Vidal Brujan from the Marlins for first baseman Matt Mervis.

Although these two players are less known in the league, they are both former top-100 prospects and will look to make a name for themselves on their new teams.

Mervis is 26 years old and came into the league in 2023 with the Cubs where he has played both seasons of his MLB career.

In 2024, Mervis played in nine games where he batted .115 with zero home runs, three RBIs, and a .302 OPS.

Brujan is also 26 years old and came into the league in 2021 with the Tampa Bay Rays where he played for three seasons before going to the Marlins in 2024.

In 2024 with the Marlins, Brujan played in 102 games where he batted .222 with two home runs, 16 RBIs, and a .622 OPS.

While neither of these players had particularly good seasons last year, they are still young and have the potential to have breakout seasons in 2025.

It will be interesting to see how these two players perform on their new teams in 2025.
