The Winnipeg Jets will have to go an extended period without one of their defencemen.

Winnipeg’s Haydn Fleury is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, Jets head coach Scott Arniel told reporters on Friday.

According to Arniel, the defenceman tried to skate ahead of the team’s morning practice, but it didn’t go as he had hoped and will now miss an extended period of time.

Fleury suffered the injury in Monday’s 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. It occurred near the end of the second period after being hit by Leafs centre Connor Dewar. The defenceman stayed on the ice as the play continued, but immediately went to the team’s locker room after the play was called dead.

He did not return for the third period.

The 28-year-old has logged six assists in 25 games in his first season with the Jets. He joined the team in the off-season, signing a one-year, $775,000 deal after spending the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

To replace him in the lineup, the Jets called up defenceman Dylan Coghlan earlier on Friday.

The Jets are slated to face the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night for their first game back from the holiday break.
