The Aaron Rodgers-New York Jets soap opera is showing no signs of slowing down as another disappointing season comes to a close.
Rodgers was asked Tuesday if he thinks Jets owner Woody Johnson would like him to return for a third campaign with the team.
“You should ask Woody,” he said.
Rodgers, who has wondered aloud if the Jets will release him after the season, said he has not had talks with Johnson about his future. The 41-year-old star quarterback said even if the Jets do want him back, he still will need time to contemplate if he returns to the field for another season.
Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer, is the headliner for a 4-11 Jets team that has been been a mess on and off the field in recent years.
The Athletic and ESPN have reported Johnson brought up the idea of benching Rodgers in late September.
The idea eventually was dismissed, but Johnson would later fire coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.
ESPN has reported that Johnson is unlikely to bring back Rodgers in 2025.
It doesn’t appear that Rodgers and Johnson have the world’s greatest relationship.
Last week, The Athletic reported that Johnson’s teenage sons influence team decision making.
On “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Rodgers seemed to poke fun at the reported organizational setup.
“There’s a first time for everything and there’s been a few of those this year — first time in 20 years,” Rodgers said. “I’ve never been released before. Being released would be a first. Being released by a teenager would also be a first. Hey, you know, I’m open to everything. I find the comedy in all of it. If that happens, hey, it’s a great story.”
