The Chicago Bears are a talented team on paper, which is why their 2024 NFL season has been frustrating to watch.
The Bears have every reason to be optimistic about their future because of the play of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and their other offensive pieces, but they cost themselves potential wins over the past few weeks due to some terrible coaching decisions.
Head coach Matt Eberflus was fired following a clock-management debacle against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
Chicago had no intentions of tanking entering the season, though it now is in a position to nab a high first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
However, the most important question is what they do with their head coaching vacancy.
One name that makes a lot of sense is former NFL head coach Ron Rivera, according to Dan Pompei of The Athletic.
“History is not the only reason Rivera should be considered. Like [Jim] Harbaugh, Rivera is a proven coaching commodity. His coaching journey began humbly as a quality control coach for his Bears in 1997. Two years later, he went to work for Andy Reid in Philadelphia as a linebackers coach before returning to Chicago to coordinate the defense in 2004,” Pompei wrote.
Rivera knows the Bears organization well as a member of their 1985 Super Bowl championship team and their former defensive coordinator.
He also has a history of rebuilding programs and developing young talent, having coached the Carolina Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance, so he could make a lot of sense for Chicago.
