Even as the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs regularly won game after game this season, there was some concern as they were winning most of those games by the skin of their teeth.
Now, there is some true concern after quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the Week 15 win against the Cleveland Browns.
If he’s unable to play in Week 16 against the Houston Texans, Carson Wentz will start for Kansas City.
Wentz is a solid backup, and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he deserves to be a starter in the NFL.
“I like everything about him, he should be starting in this league somewhere,” Reid said, via Sports Radio 810 WHB.

As recently as 2017, his second season in the NFL, Wentz was starting for a Philadelphia Eagles team that won 11 of its first 13 games.
Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in Week 14, and then had to watch as Nick Foles took his place and helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Over the next few years, Wentz’s NFL viability took some hits due to more injuries, and after the Washington Commanders released him following the 2022 season, he wasn’t signed until November of last year when the Los Angeles Rams picked him up.
Nearing his 32nd birthday, if he does well in place of Mahomes, it could act as an audition for a starting job somewhere in 2025.
