The San Francisco 49ers had a couple of years to build their roster around Brock Purdy and make a Super Bowl run with him at the helm.
He led them to the Super Bowl in his first full year as a starter, but they couldn’t finish the job.
With the team struggling to stay healthy, Purdy has shown a worrisome regression.
He went from leading the league in touchdown percentage, yards per attempt, and passer rating last season and leading the team to a 12-4 record to a much more mortal campaign this time.
That’s why the Niners must evaluate their approach to his impending contract negotiations.
According to a report by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the former Iowa State star will look for a contract at the top of the quarterback market.

Of course, he’s doing the right thing by capitalizing on his value while he can, but that will put the Niners in a tough spot.
They’ve already committed a lot of money to their stars, most of which are quite injury-prone.
The Niners are banged up and aging, and that will not change in the foreseeable future.
Their offensive and defensive lines need serious restructuring, and they’re unlikely to make the playoffs this season.
They could opt not to sign him to an extension and figure out what to do about it later, but whatever they do, their contending years might be over for now.
