The San Francisco 49ers are falling fast in the NFC playoff race after suffering a rough loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 15.
The 49ers entered the “Thursday Night Football” matchup with a slim chance to win the NFC West and make the postseason, but their offense sputtered without a touchdown against the Rams.
The rainy conditions didn’t help, but there’s no denying that quarterback Brock Purdy wasn’t sharp with the football.
Purdy has had to do more heavy lifting with running back Christian McCaffrey sidelined, and the results have been mixed at best.
Against Los Angeles, Purdy was forced into tough throws and struggled to keep the offense on schedule.
Despite another lackluster performance, the 49ers reportedly will be sticking with Purdy well into the future.
“They’re firmly committed to Brock Purdy as their long-term quarterback. I’ve been told the 49ers are still planning to negotiate a multi-year contract extension with Purdy this offseason, backing up the message they’ve consistently sent: ‘Purdy is our quarterback,’” Dianna Russini of The Athletic wrote.
It’s hard to pin all of the blame on Purdy, who’s been operating without his full assortment of weapons.
Not only is McCaffrey now out for the year after missing most of the early part of the season, but San Francisco also lost wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with an ACL tear.
The expectation around the NFL is that Purdy will sign a contract extension to stay in San Francisco, though the team may now be able to lock him in at a lower price given his recent struggles.
