The Detroit Pistons are still hanging around the NBA playoff race, though the team would be a prime candidate to sell off some pieces at the trade deadline.

The Pistons have a superstar in Cade Cunningham as well as intriguing young pieces Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland to build around, though the rest of the roster could be up for grabs.

Detroit needs to be focused on accumulating picks, especially with the 2025 NBA Draft loaded with high-end talent.

Dec. 15 is the first day that free agents who signed this offseason are eligible to be traded, meaning that talks around the league are about to pick up.

The Pistons are a great destination for teams to offload unwanted contracts in exchange for draft picks, a strategy often employed by rebuilding teams.

With that in mind, Detroit has announced one roster move.

“The Detroit Pistons are waiving center Paul Reed, sources tell ESPN. In 12 games, Reed has averaged 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 10 minutes. The move was made to give Detroit roster and salary flexibility with the NBA trade deadline less than two months away,” ESPN insider Shams Charania wrote on X.

Reed has played sparingly for Detroit this season as the team is set at the center position with Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart.

Waiving Reed gives the Pistons some more roster flexibility and the opportunity to possibly take on an additional contract in a potential trade.
