Having sold more than 50 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages — not to mention winning the Nobel Prize for literature — Gabriel García Márquez’s 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude is rightly regarded as a 20th-century classic.
The sprawling epic has long been thought unfilmable, but Netflix made the brave move to adapt the novel into a 16-episode series that’s broken up into two parts.
Set in the fictional Colombian town of Macondo, it tells the tale of cousins José Arcadio Buendía (played by Marco González and later Diego Vásquez) and Úrsula Iguarán (Susana Morales and later Marleyda Soto) who are married against their parents’ wishes. The story spans seven generations of the Buendía family, intertwining themes of sexuality, fantasy, revolution and, well, solitude.
Márquez, who died in 2014, famously refused all requests for a film version in his lifetime of his masterwork due to the complexity of the book’s narrative. With this long-awaited TV series said to be religiously faithful to the original text, the on-screen story looks set to do right by its source material.

When to watch One Hundred Years of Solitude: Part 1
The first eight-episode installment of this lavish TV adaptation premieres worldwide on Netflix on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Part 2’s eight episodes are set to follow in 2025.
