On Monday night, the 2024 Michelin Guide ceremony was held at the Glasshouse in Hell’s Kitchen, combining awards for three major culinary cities into one evening: New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. The biggest surprise of the night was Jungsik Yim’s namesake restaurant winning three Michelin stars.
TV host Java Ingram emceed the ceremony, which started with special recognitions. In New York, Suwincha “ChaCha” Singsuwan from Bangkok Supper Club in the West Village received the Exceptional Cocktails Award; Chase Sinzer and Ellis Srubas-Giammanco of Claud sibling Penny in Union Square received the Sommelier Award; the exceptional service award was given to Tina Vaughn of Eulalie in Tribeca; and the Young Chef Award went to Joseph Rhee of Jean-Georges in Midtown. Finally, the Mentor Chef Award was presented posthumously to James Kent, with his family on stage to accept it.
The Michelin Green Star Award was presented to Tribeca’s One White Street for its sustainable practices. Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Family Meal at Blue Hill in Greenwich Village, and the Lower East Side’s Dirt Candy retained their Green Stars.
Jungsik, the Korean namesake restaurant from Yim that opened in 2011, moved up from two to three Michelin stars. “The originality and impeccable presentation at Jungsik New York created a distinct experience for our inspectors collectively,” said Gwendal Poullennec, director of the Michelin Guides, in a press release. The restaurant joined four others that retained their three-Michelin-star status: Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Masa, and Per Se. According to Michelin, it is the first Korean restaurant in the U.S. to receive three stars. New York has not had a new three-star restaurant since Eleven Madison Park in 2012.
There are now 14 two-Michelin star restaurants in New York: New to the list is tasting menu restaurant César from César Ramirez along with the chef’s former restaurant, Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare. Joining them is new restaurant is Sushi Sho.
Of the 55 restaurants with one Michelin star, eight restaurants received one for the first time: Bar Miller; the reopened Cafe Boulud on the Upper East Side; Mexican fine dining restaurant, Corima on the Lower East Side; and Korean tasting menu newcomer, Joo Ok. Up in North Salem, La Bastide by Andrea Calstier landed a star; hidden tasting-menu spot Noksu; Williamsburg’s Shota Omakase; and Chinese tasting-menu spot Yingtao in Hell’s Kitchen.
Among the 91 Bib Gourmands, new to the list is Midtown’s Cambodian Bayon; East Village Indian restaurant Bungalow; Cecily in Greenpoint; and chicken temple from Simon Kim, Coqodaq. East Village Indian spot Ishq made the list; Sri Lankan-leaning Lungi on the Upper East Side; prix-fixe tasting menu Odre; Thai restaurant Tha Phraya, Chinese spot with excellent wine, Tolo on the Lower East Side, and Carroll Garden’s Thai Untable.
According to the guide, a one-star restaurant offers “high-quality cooking, worth a stop;” two stars provide “excellent cooking, worth a detour;” and three stars signify “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.” A Bib Gourmand reflects “good food at a moderate price.”
As always, throughout the year, Michelin teases new restaurants that will be included in the guide. Back in April, it added 10 restaurants to the New York guide, announcing an additional 19 just weeks ago on November 13. This year, the selection comprises 385 restaurants and over 60 types of cuisines, the Michelin Guide says.
Matthew Cabe, the newly minted President and CEO of Michelin North America, opened the ceremony by saying that “food and experiences are the greatest way to connect.” Gwendal Poullennec, director of the Michelin Guides, said, “Tonight we honor the chefs and teams that elevated dining to an art form.”
