Report: Free agent RHP Shane Bieber agrees to return to Guardians

Shane Bieber has secured a new deal as he looks to work his way back from Tommy John surgery.

Bieber will be paid a $10 million salary in 2025. The second-year player option includes a $4 million buyout, giving the seven-year MLB veteran the $14 million guaranteed for next season.

The 29-year-old right-hander pitched 12 scoreless innings to start off last season before he was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and missed the remainder of the schedule.

Bieber has spent his entire career with the Guardians, posting a 3.22 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over seven seasons. He won the American League Cy-Young award in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

It stands to reason that the six-foot-three starter won’t make his debut until mid-season, and will need time to build up to a full workload. He missed time during both the 2021 and 2023 seasons with injuries to his throwing shoulder and elbow.

Bieber will look to regain the form that saw him either make the All-Star team or finish top-10 in American League Cy Young voting for four consecutive seasons between 2019 and 2022.
