ESPN appears to be working on keeping one of its most prominent personalities in the fold.
According to reports from The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, Stephen A. Smith is on the brink of a massive contract extension that could reshape his future with the network.
The potential deal is nothing short of extraordinary. Sources suggest a six-year contract worth $120 million, which would elevate Smith to become ESPN’s highest-paid personality at $20 million annually.
Initially, ESPN proposed an $18 million annual package, with discussions centering on a five or six year commitment.
When approached about the negotiations, Smith remained characteristically tight-lipped.
“Here’s my quote, ‘I was born AT NIGHT, not last night. I don’t talk about my contract negotiations. Never have. Never will,” he told The Athletic, dismissing initial reports as premature.
When asked over text if a new deal with ESPN is close, Stephen A. Smith responded, “False.”

Currently, Smith earns $12 million annually—$8 million in direct compensation and $4 million through his production company.
His team at WME is simultaneously exploring a “first look” deal with Disney, ESPN’s parent company, involving Mr. SAS Productions.
While ESPN would cover the majority of the contract, Disney Entertainment and potentially ESPN BET are expected to contribute.
The network, however, has maintained silence when directly questioned about the potential agreement.
At 57, Smith continues to be a powerhouse in sports media, with multiple revenue streams including lucrative sports gambling deals complementing his broadcasting career.
