Yankees Free Agent Reliever Is Drawing Interest As A Starting Pitcher

The Major League Baseball offseason is getting more and more interesting as the rumors continue to fly involving free agents and trade talks.

With the majority of the attention going to New York Yankees superstar outfielder Juan Soto, another Yankees free agent is drawing interest.

Relief pitcher Clay Holmes had an up-and-down year in 2024 as he began the year as their closer, but he was eventually demoted after struggling during the season.

Despite that, Holmes is attracting interest, but there is a twist, as he reportedly is willing to become a starting pitcher.

“He was a starter in the minors, of course. But maybe your value, and maybe you see yourself best as a reliever,” insider Ken Rosenthal said, via Foul Territory.

Rosenthal mentions that Holmes is open to either role, so an interested team could use him either way.

There have been a few relief pitchers who recently became starting pitchers, including Seth Lugo, Jordan Hicks and Reynaldo Lopez.

Even with the occasional struggles in 2024, Holmes still had a productive year for the Yankees.

The right-hander appeared in 67 games, all out of the bullpen, and was 3-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 63.0 innings pitched.

This news will be something to keep an eye on to see who ends up signing Holmes and if they use him as a starter or a reliever.

Holmes is a two-time All-Star who has shown that he has the capability to be a shutdown closer, and it will all come down to what team wants to take a chance on him.
