Loose leaf tea is superior to tea bags. This is something I know that still doesn’t prevent me from buying boxes of tea bags for the very basic fact that they’re more convenient. But, when Herbs & Kettles sent me this brass tea strainer, I found myself reaching for the loose leaf or chai more often. Unlike the mesh balls that leak when sitting in water, the strainer perches atop a mug, ready to strain out any solids as they’re poured in; and the tight brass-wire weave means that it’ll catch pretty much everything, leaving a leaf-free cup of tea. It’s ideal for masala chai, poured directly from the pot after boiling. But it also encourages me to use teapots when I’m brewing other varieties of loose leaf tea, which adds a nice ritualistic element to the preparation of a cup. It’s also so much prettier than all of my other tea strainers. (While mine came from the aforementioned Indian tea brand Herbs & Kettles, I’ve also seen similar strainers on Etsy.) On its own it’d make a nice stocking stuffer, but I’d recommend pairing it with your favorite tin of tea for a more complete gift for the tea lover in your life.
