The Minnesota Vikings are adding quarterback Daniel Jones, who was released by the New York Giants just days ago after a disappointing five seasons.
Jones will start out on the Vikings’ practice squad, but he could give them a solid backup option behind Sam Darnold, who is having a breakout season.
But as far as Jones making an actual impact, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith isn’t impressed because Jones will be backing up a man who has also had a disappointing career.
“Here is what I would say to Daniel Jones. You’re backing up Sam Darnold,” Smith said.

Both Jones and Darnold were very high draft picks several years ago and were thought to have the potential to become legitimate franchise quarterbacks in the NFL.
But neither panned out, and it seemed to render both as, at best, decent backup quarterbacks.
But this season, Darnold is playing excellent football, as Smith noted, and he has guided the Vikings to a 9-2 record while giving them a seemingly real chance of winning the NFC North.
Jones threw for an adequate 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns as a rookie in 2019, but his production has greatly declined since, and in 10 games this year, he is at 2,070 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns and seven interceptions.
It remains to be seen if he will ever get another opportunity to start under center for an NFL team moving forward, but perhaps there is a situation that will help him significantly improve his production, much like Darnold has this year in Minnesota.
