The New England Patriots are using the 2024 NFL season to evaluate young players on the roster, and none of them are as important as quarterback Drake Maye.
Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been the starter the past several weeks and is showing signs of growth each game.
Maye offers the Patriots a quarterback who can throw downfield and extend plays with his legs and athleticism.
New England won’t be making any noise in the playoffs given its record, but that doesn’t matter so long as Maye continues to grow and improve the rest of the way.
The Patriots may have lost to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 11, but Maye led them to a victory against the Chicago Bears in Week 10.
Quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney has to be pleased with Maye’s progress, and he recently named his favorite play from the rookie so far.
“My favorite play from Drake was when we took a knee to win the [Bears] game,” McCartney said, via Mike Kadlick of CLNS Media.

The comment was meant to be taken as a positive given that Maye led the Patriots to a victory.
The rookie is able to pull off plays not many other quarterbacks can due to his physical traits and talent, but there’s still a long way to go before he can be considered a polished product.
For now, McCartney and the rest of the Patriots coaching staff need to continue to put Maye in positions to succeed.
