The Daniel Jones era is now officially over for the New York Giants after they released him on Friday.

Jones made a public statement on Thursday where he sounded like a man who knew he was on his way out, and he reportedly had a meeting with ownership early on Friday during which he asked to be released.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who played with Jones in New York, said he’s still close with Jones and wished the signal-caller well moving forward, per Tim McManus.

The Giants took Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 draft shortly before Eli Manning played his final game for them, and they hoped that Jones would be a worthy heir apparent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist.

Jones had a decent rookie season, but he has been unable to duplicate that type of production ever since.

In 10 games this season, he has thrown for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing just 63.3 percent of his pass attempts.

The Giants will be moving forward with Tommy DeVito, a North Jersey native who filled in last season after Jones suffered a torn ACL in Week 9.

Right now, they’re tied for the second-worst record in the NFL at 2-8, which has left their fans hoping that the organization will end up drafting its next true franchise QB in this spring’s upcoming draft.

But for now, Jones is a free agent, and it will be interesting to see how much interest he attracts on the open market.
