The 34-year-old left Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche after appearing to suffer a groin injury in the third period. He was replaced in net by backup David Rittich.

It wasn’t immediately clear when Kuemper suffered the injury, but he appeared to be in pain as play progressed. Eventually, he motioned to officials to blow the whistle, after which he skated off the ice on his own and headed directly to the locker room.

Prior to leaving the game, Kuemper made 18 of 20 saves for a .900 save percentage.

After the team’s loss, Kings coach Jim Hiller said he had no further update on Kuemper.

The Saskatoon native was traded to the Kings from the Washington Capitals in exchange for Pierre-Luc Dubois. In nine games this season, Kuemper owns a 2.65 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

He won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022, before spending two years with the Capitals organization.

Meanwhile, the Kings also lost defenceman Caleb Jones to an upper-body injury during the game against Colorado.
