It’ll be a sad day when LeBron James retires from the NBA.

Again and again, many nervous basketball fans ask the same question: is that day coming soon?

Speaking on “First Take”, ESPN insider Shams Charania shed some light on James’ potential future.

He said next season could be it for James, but added a major caveat.

Charania said:

“My sense is next season could potentially be his last season in the NBA. … Maybe Bryce James keeps him around an extra year or two.”

James is just weeks away from turning 40 years old and, in some ways, is playing the best basketball of his career.

He is experiencing his best three-point shooting and is also landing more free throws than ever before.

On top of all that, James is often able to be the Lakers’ second option behind Anthony Davis.

Head coach JJ Redick has made fans very happy with his insistence on centering the offense around Davis.

That has worked out well for the team, who hold a 7-4 record.

But it’s also been great for James, who is able to rest more and not push himself as hard, even though he is still averaging 24.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 9.4 assists per game.

If James really does retire at the end of next season, it’ll be a massive moment for the league and he will be celebrated as perhaps the greatest NBA star of all time.

But Charania said the allure of playing with another son, Bryce, could convince him to stick around.

Even at his age, that seems very possible.
