Facing the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, the Dallas Cowboys not only lost the game but also lost star quarterback Dak Prescott to a hamstring injury, which handed the position over to backup Cooper Rush for the weeks ahead and potentially the rest of the season.
At this point, Prescott’s return to the field this season isn’t looking likely at all, as the injury is worse than expected, which means the Cowboys could lean on Rush from here on out, which isn’t a great sign of things to come for Dallas.
However, there also is an opportunity to get a look at young quarterback Trey Lance, who was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers last year.
Although Lance’s time with the 49ers was cut short due to the ascension of Brock Purdy, the No. 3 overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft might still have a promising future if given the reps and chance to develop the right way in Dallas.
There’s no better time than now to see what Lance can do, because chances are Rush isn’t going to cut it as the starter and the Cowboys aren’t going to make the playoffs.
With the season basically a lost cause, one FOX Sports analyst said Lance deserves a shot to show what he can do.
“It’s bleak enough for the Dallas Cowboys, I would be interested in trying to get Trey Lance on the field,” David Helman said, via All Facts No Brakes.

It is unfortunate that a team as talented as the Cowboys has to come to terms with the fact that their season is essentially over, but Lance can provide some hope if he can show why the 49ers were so high on him in the first place.
Plus, the 24-year-old is likely itching for an opportunity to get on the field because there’s no telling when he’ll have another chance like this in the NFL.
