The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a significant blow in Week 9 when quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a right hamstring injury against the Atlanta Falcons.

The situation appears more serious than initially thought, with the 31-year-old signal-caller potentially facing an extended absence that could stretch beyond several weeks.

Initial projections suggested a four-week recovery period, but recent developments paint a more concerning picture.

NFL Insider Slater revealed that Prescott is dealing with a partial avulsion of his hamstring tendon, where the tissue has partially torn away from the bone.

This diagnosis has prompted the Cowboys to carefully evaluate whether to place their franchise quarterback on injured reserve.

“I’m told it typically takes more than a 4 week recovery. In some cases, they let it scar over, repair and then strengthen,” Slater wrote.

The Cowboys’ cautious approach is evident as Prescott seeks additional medical opinions before making any decisions about injured reserve placement, which would automatically sideline him for at least three games.

This injury comes at a crucial time for Dallas (3-5), who now turn to veteran backup Cooper Rush for their upcoming clash with the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles (6-2).

Rush is no stranger to stepping in for Prescott, having impressed during the 2022 season with a 4-1 record as a starter.

Throughout his NFL career, Rush has shown capability under center, completing 165 of 275 passes for 1,786 yards, with nine touchdowns against six interceptions.

Waiting in the wings is Trey Lance, who joined the Cowboys before this season in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers.

Lance will serve as Rush’s backup while the team navigates through this challenging period without their starter.
