In September, retail giant Amazon announced that after four years, it would require all employees to return to the office five days a week. The company is the latest to follow this trend which is set to again redefine how people work. However, how effective are the RTO orders regarding efficiency and productivity? We’ve dissected this question in this guide. 

The Gradual Move Towards Working from Home 

Over the last decade or so, companies around the world have become more open to work-from-home situations with employees. Once the technical hurdles were overcome, many employees found the situation to be beneficial. Today, many companies still permit home office arrangements, whether it be for one day a week or on a case-by-case basis.

The gradual home-working progression has been part of a wider trend that has seen people enjoying everything from dining to entertainment from home. Amazon has stated that working in the office is more conducive to a collaborative environment and is important to achieving their future goals. Studies have even found that productivity is reduced through working-at-home arrangements.

The Downsides to Remote Work

In a widespread study of 10,000 employees, researchers found that while the total hours worked at home increased by 30%, output stayed the same as in-office work. This suggests that productivity fell by 20%. Major companies take note of these types of statistics, especially if they need to pay for hours worked overtime.

Other studies found that working at home impacts the ability to innovate. Humans are social beings, and as Amazon pointed out, the more frequently collaborators meet, the more chance they have to refine new concepts. In-person work also allows greater oversight from management teams and one-on-one check-ins. Regardless, not all employees are convinced.

The Benefits of Remote Work

Although they may have to work additional hours to meet the demands of their jobs, many employees are willing to sacrifice their time for greater flexibility. Many have cited greater satisfaction in avoiding the traffic of the morning and afternoon commute.

Other benefits of remote work include minimized distractions and enhanced creativity. There’s also evidence to suggest that the quality of work improves when people have autonomy over their work location. 

The Verdict: Return to Office or Stay at Home?

There are several factors that businesses must weigh up before declaring a blanket return to office order. While there is evidence that suggests improved collaboration and productivity, it can lead to reduced morale. For those wanting to retain staff, it’s important to take into account the needs of individuals, opting for flexible schedules rather than blanket mandates. With strong communication and empathy, mutual respect between workers and employers is established.
