The Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens were able to agree to a trade earlier this week involving veteran receiver Diontae Johnson.

Johnson and a 2025 sixth-round pick head to Baltimore while Carolina gains a 2025 fifth-round pick.

Former NFL GM Michael Lombardi joined The Pat McAfee Show Thursday to share his thoughts on the trade.

“Basically, (the Panthers) just gave him to them…Somebody explain to me what Carolina is doing…This really was a ridiculous trade,” Lombardi said.

The Panthers seem to be in a mess at the moment.

They have not had a winning record since the year they last made the playoffs (2017) and haven’t won a playoff game since 2015.

There have also been seven head coaches since the start of the 2019 season.

Now, the front office is trading away impact players for next to nothing.

Trading Johnson wasn’t a terrible decision, but the fact that they only got a fifth-round pick in return simply isn’t good enough.

Head coach Dave Canales is in a tough spot because he has a struggling roster and a trigger-happy front office.

It would not be a surprise to see Carolina have a bad record at the conclusion of the season.

Furthermore, it would not be surprising to see the rebuild develop more slowly than originally thought because of how unsuccessful the front office has been so far at building a competitive team.

Owner David Tepper is already on a very short leash with the media and fan base as it is, so he cannot blame Canales for the team’s issues.
