Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been sacked after yesterday’s 2-1 loss to West Ham at London Stadium. This leaves United 14th in the Premier League table. Ten Hag has been under massive pressure since the end of the 2023/24 season.
United have had their worst start to a Premier League campaign after nine games, with three wins, two draws, and four losses. The team has failed to improve, leaving the owners to make a major decision.
United seem to have lost faith in Erik ten Hag despite the backing of chief executive Omar Berrada, who said in September that he was optimistic about the club’s future under Ten Hag’s management.
The 54-year-old, despite having signed a one-year contract extension in the summer, was informed on Monday and has left United after two and a half years in charge. Ten Hag was appointed manager in April 2022 as a replacement for Ralf Rangnick. He won two domestic trophies with the team, the 2023 Carabao Cup and the 2024 FA Cup.
The club now works with former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim coach. He was recruited in the offseason to work with ten Hag. The club issued a statement confirming the news. They said: “Erik ten Hag has left Manchester United men’s first-team manager role.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach supported by the current coaching team whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Van Nistelrooy’s first game as interim manager will be against Leicester City in the League Cup on Wednesday before hosting Chelsea at home on Sunday.
Potential Candidates
Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter was sacked in April 2023. Although his time at Chelsea may not have been the best and was short, due to his previous success as head coach at Brighton & Hove Albion FC, he has been linked to United. Potter transformed the team from bottom-sixth to top ten, finishing ninth in the Premier League during the 2021-22 season.
Former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel, who has a reputation for being able to get the best out of his players, is pragmatic and tactical, even though his final season at Bayern Munich saw the team finish third in the Bundesliga, which was considered the worst finish for the team in more than three decades. Unfortunately has been recently appointed as the head coach for the England Men’s National Team.
United previously approached Zinedine Zidane after they sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjær in November 2021. Zidane is considered one of the most successful coaches in the world. As manager of Real Madrid, he won 9 out of 9 times every final he appeared in and 13 trophies, including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, La Liga and Supercopa de Espana.
And many more.
What does the public think?
There’s only one opinion on ten Hag’s managerial career at United, and it doesn’t seem positive.
It is the end of an Era for ten Hag, which many people seem happy with. What are your thoughts? Did Ten Hag deserve to be sacked, or should he have been given more time?
