Brock Purdy was the very last player picked in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Usually, “Mr. Irrelevant” is a term of endearment for an athlete who is a very long shot to become an NFL player, let alone a starter.

In just two years, Purdy has proven to be a very good aberration for the San Francisco 49ers.

As a rookie, he started in five games and made the PFWA All-Rookie team with 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

Last season, Purdy rose to the top of the depth chart and helped lead the Niners to Super Bowl LVIII after passing for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 picks.

Despite his success, some media members, most notably radio and television host Colin Cowherd, have mostly dismissed Purdy’s numbers due to the talented roster around him.

That reaction has irked San Francisco fans including former star quarterback Joe Montana.

In a Friday interview with “Arrowhead Addict” (via “Coach Yac” on X), Montana was equally dismissive of those who question Purdy’s ability.

“I think part of what’s happening with Brock is that he went to a good team. Hey, he’s fortunate. You could say the same for the team Steve [Young] inherited when I left. He had all the weapons he needed,” said Montana.

Montana also addressed those who consider Purdy a “game manager” as if the term means something negative.

“Then there’s that ‘Well, he’s a game manager’, all quarterbacks are game managers,” said Montana. “You have to understand when’s the time to take a risk and when not to… and I think he’s done that very well.”

So far this season the Niners are 2-2 and Purdy has 1,130 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions with a 73.6 quarterback rating.
