After winning a second straight Super Bowl title, the Kansas City Chiefs headed into the NFL offseason with the intention of addressing the wide receiver position, which was arguably its biggest weakness during the 2023 campaign.

The Chiefs got aggressive in their attempt to add more talent around second-year wideout Rashee Rice and were able to do an admirable job by drafting Xavier Worthy and signing veteran Marquise Brown.

Unfortunately, Brown hasn’t played a regular-season game for the Chiefs after having surgery on his preseason shoulder injury, which was a big blow, and now things have gotten worse with Rice going down with a knee injury in Week 4 that could keep him out for the rest of the 2024 NFL season.

The Chiefs have placed Rice on injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least the next four games, with an uncertain timeline beyond that.

“We’ll get testing done and let you know,” head coach Andy Reid said, via NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

This is a devastating blow for the Chiefs as Rice has become one of Patrick Mahomes’ favorite targets, getting off to a good start to the season with 24 catches for 288 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

With Rice potentially done for the year, the Chiefs will have to pivot, with the franchise being mentioned in trade rumors to acquire another star wide receiver.

Although it remains to be seen whether the Chiefs can acquire a veteran wideout, the team will likely do what it can to bring one in and stay on track to pull off what would be a historic three-peat.
