The Kansas City Chiefs have started their 2024 season with a perfect 3-0 record, but there’s a sense that they’re not firing on all cylinders just yet.
Patrick Mahomes has acknowledged that the team isn’t playing up to its full potential, which is both a concern and a tantalizing prospect for Chiefs fans.
Former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith shared his thoughts on the current state of the team on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“They’re not playing well and they’re 3-0. So in some ways, that’s kind of scary,” Smith said. “I do think great teams do that. They find the way to make the one play. I think if you’re a Kansas City fan, in some ways you should be really encouraged, right?”

Smith’s words highlight the silver lining in the Chiefs’ situation.
Despite their struggles, they’re finding ways to win, a hallmark of truly great teams.
The offense, typically a well-oiled machine, has been sputtering.
Rashee Rice leads the way with 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns, but the production drops off sharply after that.
Even tight end Travis Kelce, usually a touchdown magnet, has yet to find the end zone this season.
Statistically, the Chiefs rank 15th in the league with 984 yards over 188 offensive plays, with 349 rushing yards on 85 carries and 659 passing yards on 92 attempts.
They’ve been perfect on fourth-down conversions, going 3-for-3, but it’s clear that Mahomes and company are still searching for their rhythm.
However, if this is what a “slow start” looks like for Kansas City, the rest of the NFL should be wary of what’s to come when the Chiefs hit their stride.
