The Chicago Bears’ 1-2 start to the 2024 NFL season has raised concerns, particularly regarding quarterback Caleb Williams’ development.
In their recent game against the Indianapolis Colts, Williams showcased his potential, completing 33 of 52 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns.
However, Williams’ promising display was marred by turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble.
While such mistakes are often attributed to rookie inexperience, NFL analyst Mike Greenberg suggests there might be deeper issues at play within the Bears organization.
Expressing his concerns on his ESPN Radio show, Greenberg stated, “I’m worried. Very worried, because this is their M.O. They don’t want to pay coaches who still have money left on their deal.”

He drew comparisons to the success of other offensive coordinators like Klint Kubiak and Ben Johnson with the Saints and Lions, respectively, questioning whether Bears OC Shane Waldron is the right fit to guide Williams in his early NFL career.
Greenberg further cautioned against a potential scenario where the Bears might repeat past mistakes: “They very well may have put Caleb Williams right in the same box that they put Mitch Trubisky in once and they put Justin Fields in once.”
He emphasized the detrimental impact of frequent coaching changes, warning that if the Bears were to start over with new coaches, forcing Williams to learn new systems and verbiage, it would be “the most predictable disgrace that we have seen in sports in recent memory.”
The current struggles of the Bears’ offense have indeed sparked doubts about Waldron’s compatibility with Williams.
As both Waldron and Williams navigate this challenging transition, the success of their partnership may hinge on the OC’s ability to adapt his play-calling to better support Williams while addressing the team’s offensive line issues.
