House Passes Short-Term Bill to Avert a Shutdown

“The House on Wednesday passed a short-term spending bill to avert a government shutdown just ahead of the November elections, punting a bigger funding fight to the end of the year,” the New York Times reports.

“Speaker Mike Johnson again turned to Democrats to supply the bulk of the votes to keep federal funding flowing through Dec. 20, after conservatives in his own conference said they would not support the legislation because it would not cut spending and did not include a measure imposing new proof-of-citizenship requirements on voter registration.”

Washington Post: “Already, congressional leaders are bracing for an uglier end-of-year funding fight. The balance of power in both chambers of Congress may change, based on polling in House and Senate races, and a president-elect may well weigh in on the nation’s spending priorities for the 2025 fiscal year.”
