Sunderland superstar Chris Rigg made headlines this weekend after his incredibly well-taken goal at the Stadium Of Light in the first Wear-Tees match of the season.
Rigg Shines
In a tense match between Sunderland and Middlesbrough on Saturday, 17-year-old Chris Rigg stole the show with a fantastic performance and goal. This proved enough for the Black Cats, securing their third victory in all competitions against Middlesbrough in 12 years.
After an opening end-to-end affair, it was just before the 25th minute when Patrick Roberts cut inside and saw his effort blocked by George Edmundson. Wonderkid Rigg then pounced, poking it beyond the reach of Boro goalkeeper Seny Dieng and finishing it off with an outrageous backheel goal – sending the Stadium Of Light into ruptures. A fifth start of the season for Rigg saw him get up and running with his first goal of the new season, accompanied by his first Player of the Match award, which will be deemed well-deserved by many.
Sunderland Back to Winning Ways
This victory means Sunderland remains second in the EFL Championship and just one point behind West Bromwich Albion after winning three out of three games at home this season. They return to winning ways following last weekend’s defeat to Plymouth Argyle, who had not managed to win with Wayne Rooney in charge yet. They now have five wins out of six in what has been an impressive start to life under the new management of French boss Regis Le Bris.
Le Bris has already implemented an exciting style of play within the young Sunderland side, which has come as a welcome change for many fans. It allows them to witness the constant development of so many upcoming talents scattered throughout the team in all areas of the pitch.
Up Next
Sunderland travel to Vicarage Road next, on Saturday 28th September. They face 8th-place Watford, who have so far had a mixed bag of results – with 3 wins, a draw and 2 defeats. The Black Cats will be hoping to maintain their fine form to keep the pressure mounted on league leaders, West Brom, who are still unbeaten this season.
