Blue Jays reinstate Orelvis Martinez, transfer Daulton Varsho to 60-day IL

The Toronto Blue Jays made a pair of administrative moves on Tuesday when they reinstated Orelvis Martinez from the suspended list and transferred Daulton Varsho to the 60-day injured list.

Martinez, who was suspended 80 games for violating the MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program in late June, was then optioned to the team’s spring training complex, the team announced.

The 22-year-old infielder’s suspension didn’t officially end until Monday, but he was allowed to start a rehab assignment with triple-A Buffalo on Sept. 8, 15 days before his suspension came to an end.

In 74 total games with triple-A Buffalo this season, Martinez slashed .267/.346/.523 with 17 home runs.

In just one game with the Blue Jays this season, the six-foot-one righty went 1-for-3 with a single before being handed his suspension.

Varsho’s move to the 60-day IL was merely a paper move, as his season came to an end last week when the team announced that he was being shut down with a shoulder injury.

The outfielder had surgery to fix a rotator cuff issue in the front of his shoulder. His recovery may impact the start of his spring training schedule, but Varsho told Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi he is hoping “to be full-go by then.”

Varsho led all outfielders with a combined 28 defensive runs saved this season. At the plate, Varsho hit .214/.293/.407 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs in 136 games.
