The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are off to a 2-0 start and the team has embraced Baker Mayfield as its new franchise quarterback following a career year in 2023 and a resounding playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
He had major shoes to fill after taking over for 7-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, but he has won the team and fanbase over with his performance and personality, which was on full display during a recent podcast appearance where Baker told a funny story about Brady’s tenure with the Bucs.
Former MLB Cy Young winner Corey Kluber hosted Mayfield on his podcast, Casa De Klub, and when asked about the funniest story Baker had heard about Brady’s tenure in Tamps, Mayfield said that Brady used to play mind games with the offensive coaches and if they ran a play during a game that he didn’t like during the week of practice, he’d intentionally throw the ball away or throw the ball at a receiver’s feet.
Mayfield came under fire a bit for these comments, particularly from Skip Bayless, but it’s not surprising to objective fans who watched Brady’s tenure with the Bucs, especially over his final season when the offense started to look clunky.
I’ve defended Baker for maturing, saying all the right things. But now on a podcast he says Brady kept the team on edge, stressed, purposely threw balls away on plays he didn’t want called. I’m sure much truth there but Baker: A BUNCH OF YOUR TEAMMATES HAVE RINGS BECAUSE OF BRADY

Mayfield and Brady couldn’t be more different, but it’s clear the fans and team have taken quite well to Baker even though he is a polar opposite from the team’s previous QB.
It’s always nice to do a seamless transition from one franchise QB to another, and Bucs fans have been fortunate enough to do exactly that.
