The New England Patriots were beaten down on “Thursday Night Football” by the rival New York Jets.

Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett was replaced late in the fourth quarter by rookie Drake Maye, which provoked questions from the New England media toward head coach Jerod Mayo about the current situation at the position.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not our quarterback,” Mayo said the morning after the road loss, via Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald.

Through the first three games of the 2024 NFL season, the Patriots are 1-2.

They have shown a lot of fight for a team that was supposed to be in rebuild mode, but they have put up 20 points just once in the first three weeks.

Brissett has been a fine game manager for them.

The former Super Bowl champion has completed more than 60 percent of his passes and hasn’t turned over the ball.

However, he has thrown just one touchdown pass and isn’t the definition of prolific.

In a league where Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers are making magic happen both on the field and on the scoreboard, New England isn’t exactly on track to doing that with a game manager like Brissett.

But again, it seems as though Mayo feels like his team can stay competitive for the time being with Brissett rather than giving Maye some experience.

The Pats have a mini bye before they get ready to face the San Francisco 49ers on the road in Week 4.

Even if Mayo wants to use Maye, that doesn’t seem like the type of game you’d want your rookie quarterback to play.
