Get ready for a magical mystery tour, because Minecraft is getting the live-action movie treatment. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have teamed up for A Minecraft Movie, which will premiere in theaters on April 4, 2025.
Helmed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, the video game adaptation puts Jason Momoa and Jack Black in a blocky world where, as its synopsis says, “creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival.” Wednesday’s Emma Myers, Peacemaker’s Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge also star.
The movie follows a group of misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) — who travel through a portal to the Overworld, the ubiquitous Minecraft cubic fantasy realm that flourishes on creativity and imagination.
With the help of expert crafter Steve (Black), the crew embark on a magical adventure that will help them reconnect with the traits that make each of them unique, giving them the skills they need to thrive back home.
Minecraft the video game first hit shelves in 2011. Thanks to its unique world-building and engaging gameplay, Minecraft has sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, making it the bestselling video game of all time. It has spawned a number of successful spinoffs and Microsoft, which acquired the game’s developer Mojang Studios in 2014, holds a producer credit on the movie.
