After months of speculation, the New England Patriots announced they will start veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett instead of rookie Drake Maye to open the 2024 NFL season.

Not surprisingly, the situation has sparked lots of debate, with some feeling a rookie should remain on the sidelines while others think he should start right away if he’s the best signal-caller on the roster.

One Patriots insider, Greg Bedard, said he feels new head coach Jerod Mayo has fumbled the whole situation, especially when it comes to how he’s handled it publicly in front of the media.

“It was another in a series of missteps for Jerod Mayo since he’s gotten this job,” Bedard said, via CLNS Media.

Maye was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after putting up some prolific stats at the University of North Carolina, and there would’ve been years when he likely would’ve been the first player selected.

Brissett, on the other hand, is a career backup who did a good job filling in for Deshaun Watson with the Cleveland Browns in 2022 before appearing in three games with the Washington Commanders last season.

Mayo has replaced Bill Belichick, who parted ways with the Patriots after being their head coach for 24 seasons.

Maye barely played in New England’s first preseason game, which led some to wonder what Mayo was doing, and though the rookie QB did somewhat better in the next two games, he perhaps wasn’t impressive enough for Mayo to give him the starting job.

There is a real possibility the Patriots finish with the NFL’s worst record this season, and therefore an argument could be made that Mayo should start Maye and let him take his lumps to grow into the role sooner rather than later.
