A number of teams cut some perfectly capable players on Tuesday in order to trim their rosters down to 53 men before the NFL’s mandated deadline.

One such player was wide receiver Tim Patrick, who had been a member of the Denver Broncos ever since joining their practice squad in 2017.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he’s expected to join the Detroit Lions’ practice squad and perhaps eventually become a member of their active squad.

Although Patrick went undrafted out of the University of Utah in 2017, he developed into a reliable offensive option by his third season in the NFL.

When the Broncos acquired future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson two years ago, Patrick had improved so much that he was a reason some tabbed them as instant Super Bowl contenders.

Unfortunately for them, he tore his ACL during training camp and missed all of the 2022 season, which turned into a disaster for them.

There was hope a year ago that the hiring of Super Bowl-winning head coach Sean Payton would improve their fortunes, but Patrick tore his Achilles during training camp and missed a second straight season.

Detroit has one of the best wide receivers in the game in Amon-Ra St. Brown, who recently received a generous contract extension, but their options behind him seem iffy.

They hope that Jameson Williams, who has shown some scattered promise, will blossom, but if Patrick stays healthy and returns to form, he could be a legitimate WR2 candidate for the defending NFC North champions.
