The Kansas City Chiefs have had an uncertain running back room for a few years behind Isiah Pacheco, who has emerged as a solid young starter.
With the preseason in the rearview mirror and roster cuts being made in waves earlier in the week, plenty of veteran talent just hit the free-agent market, and the Chiefs are reportedly scooping up some help for their backfield.
Insider Jordan Schultz announced that the Chiefs are signing veteran running back Samaje Perine after he was recently cut by the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.

Perine didn’t last long on the open market and should immediately step in as Kansas City’s replacement for Jerick McKinnon after posting 693 total yards last year.
The Chiefs running back room now consists of Perine, Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and undrafted rookie Carson Steele, who had a strong preseason and earned himself a roster spot.
The Chiefs cut Emani Bailey, Keaontay Ingram, and Deneric Prince from the RB room earlier in the week and also cut Perine’s cousin, La’Mical, back in May.
Denver had been working to trade Perine as it had been clearly ready to move on from the veteran given where the team is in its development and with all the young running back talent on the roster.
Perine turns 29 in September and has appeared in at least 16 games in each of the last four seasons while posting a career-high 50 catches for 455 yards in Denver last year as a safety valve for Russell Wilson.
Perine’s ability as a receiver out of the backfield made him an ideal McKinnon replacement, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Chiefs work him into their system.
