With the Pittsburgh Steelers brass tired of being mediocre each year in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era and Kenny Pickett simply not cutting it as Mike Tomlin’s starter under center, the storied franchise decided to make a couple of moves during the NFL offseason to address the quarterback position.

The first move was signing veteran Russell Wilson, who was released by the Denver Broncos after two less-than-stellar seasons in the Mile High City and head coach Sean Payton wanting to go in a different direction at the position.

Wilson getting added into the mix in Pittsburgh seemed like a step in the right direction as it was a low-risk, high-reward situation, especially after making their next move in which they made a trade with the Chicago Bears to acquire quarterback Justin Fields.

With the Bears starting over with rookie Caleb Williams, Fields was on his way out despite showing a lot of promise in Chicago and the Steelers were ready to take him on, and it seems like they might be happy they did, as he has been impressing in training camp thus far.

On Sunday, Fields made another strong case for being the Week 1 starter under center, connecting with star wide receiver George Pickens on a 70-yard bomb for a touchdown.

With Wilson battling a calf issue, Fields has gotten his chance to shine with the first unit, and he’s done better than expected so far, which has led to a growing quarterback controversy in Pittsburgh with only about a month left until the start of the 2024 NFL season.

In Week 1, the Steelers will go on the road to face the new-look Atlanta Falcons on September 8.
