After a forgettable two-year stint with the Denver Broncos, one-time Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson was hoping for a fresh start with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He signed with the team during the offseason, which seemed like the ideal situation for the veteran quarterback.
Ironically enough, the Steelers’ brass wanted some insurance behind or in front of Wilson, and the team made a surprising trade with the Chicago Bears to acquire quarterback Justin Fields.
Both quarterbacks were pushed out by their last teams, with Bo Nix coming in for the Broncos and Caleb Williams taking over under center for the Bears, which means both new Steelers have a chip on their shoulders and are eager to prove themselves.
However, things haven’t gotten off to a good start for Wilson in Pittsburgh, as he has been dealing with a calf injury, giving Fields the ideal opportunity to showcase his skills and make a case to be the starter for the Steelers come Week 1.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Wilson is still in line to get the starting job in Pittsburgh, but Fields has made an impression so far with more time with the top unit.
“I think Russell Wilson remains in the pole position, but I also think that Justin Fields has opened some eyes, and they see the type of offense they could have,” Schefter said, via NFL on ESPN.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Wilson could be watching from the bench to start his stint with the Steelers if head coach Mike Tomlin really likes what he sees from Fields.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out for the Steelers and who starts in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons on the road on Sept. 8.
